Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
